Walter Hill's hip, super-stylized action film unfurls in a dystopian near-future, when various gangs control New York City. Each gang sports a unique moniker ('The Warriors,' 'The Baseball Furies,' 'The Rogues'), with a costume underscoring its "theme"; each, in turn, is also responsible for one geographic area. Hill sets up the landscape as a massive, violent playground - replete with bridges, vacant subway tunnels, parks, abandoned buildings and the like, all ripe for exploration and adventure. As the tale opens, the titular Coney Island has traveled to the Bronx to attend a city-wide meeting of all gangs; at that event, however, the psychotic leader of a rival gang, The Rogues (David Patrick Kelly of Dreamscape) assassinates the head of the city's foremost gang, but The Warriors are pegged as culpable. This sends the gang fleeing through the labyrinthine city. With every thug in Manhattan in vicious, homicidal pursuit, they must also overcome all obstacles in their way. Throughout, Hill keeps the onscreen violence absurd, exaggerated and unrealistic, downplaying death to an extreme degree; despite this fact, the film sparked a massive amount of controversy and an ugly backlash for allegedly inciting violence and destruction in several theaters where it initially played. James Remar, Michael Beck and Deborah Van Valkenburgh lead the ensemble cast. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Review For Movie The Warriors
Walter Hill's vibrant 1979 adaptation of Sol Yurick's 1965 novel - based loosely on an ancient Greek story called "Anabasis" - is a classic cinematic record of New York City circa 1979.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Cartoonishly violent, insanely moody and pointless.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

A cult film that deserves its reputation.
Michael W. Phillips, Jr.-Goatdog's Movies

The Warriors Rule! One of the best action-thrillers of the 70s!
Clint Morris-Brag Magazine

Yeah, it's really good.
Walter Chaw-Film Freak Central

The only trouble is that I half expected them to break out into song and dance any minute a la West Side Story.
John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis

OK, it's not Greek tragedy, but it is based (loosely) on Xenophon, so there.
Thomas Delapa-Boulder Weekly

Visually stunning and emotionally gripping, THE WARRIORS is a classic that, after a quarter-century, has finally recieved the loving finishing touches that it so rightly deserves
Brian Mckay-eFilmCritic.com

See it once, and you'll want to see it again.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Tight, terse and tough. The great Walter Hill once again proves he has few equals when staging intense confrontations.
Chuck O'Leary-FulvueDrive-in.com

Just what is the fanboys' beef with the new DVD "Director's Cut" of The Warriors, anyway?
Eric Henderson-Slant Magazine

The movie can also be enjoyed, and enjoyed thoroughly, as a mean, dirty piece of pulp mythology.
M.E. Russell-Oregonian

Once-notorious gang movie, now a delightfully retro experience
James Sanford-Kalamazoo Gazette

A campy treat for anyone who wants to "come out and play-ay!"
Rob Thomas-Capital Times (Madison, WI)

An action movie of great style and energy
Jon Niccum-Lawrence Journal-World

A bad joke shoddily disguised as a gritty urban thriller. Didn't any of these guys have subway tokens?
Rob Vaux-Flipside Movie Emporium

One of the great cult films of all time.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

a shameless, but entertaining, ode to the appeal of criminality and gangland camaraderie
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk

A pleasure to watch, even if only to laugh at the memorable costumes and lines. Can you dig it?
